Inicis, the most iconic wine from Bohigas, is back

09/04/2025

We're launching the new Inicis, a 100% Sumoll wine from the 2023 vintage, in a very limited edition.

At Bohigas, we're especially excited to share news that connects us deeply with our history and roots. After six years, we're once again making Inicis, our most iconic wine, steeped in symbolism. It's not just a wine; it's a tribute to the Anoia winemaking landscape and to our family.

It all begins with a very special vineyard. In 1921, on the Can Macià estate in Òdena, a vineyard was planted with Sumoll, a native variety that gradually disappeared over the years to make way for more commercial grapes. But we decided to preserve it. And today, more than a hundred years later, this vineyard is still alive and well, giving us a small but extraordinary production. Only 400 bottles of 2023. And each one is unique.

Sumoll: Our Most Authentic Variety

Sumoll is one of those varieties that tell stories. It was previously grown alongside other varieties like Parellada in the same vineyard, and the old, goblet-shaped vines offer a small but extremely high-quality yield. We cultivate it organically and harvest it by hand, as has always been the case.

For years, Sumoll took a backseat to more modern varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. But we believed in its potential and preserved a portion of this vineyard that, in the 1980s, almost no one wanted to save. We like to think we've given it a second life, and the Principios is the best example.

Vination in Clay Jars

The production of the Inicis wine follows the tradition: we crush the grapes with a stick and vinify it in clay jars, just as it was done in the past. This small vinification process receives our full attention and care to extract the essence of a variety as unique and expressive as Sumoll.

We only make Inicis in years where the climate has been optimal for offering the best quality. The 2023 vintage was one of these special vintages, and that's why we decided to make it again.

A tribute to family heritage

This year, Inicis wine is presented in a new format: a low Imperial Bordeaux bottle, which gives it a majestic air and reinforces its personality. The label also has a very special meaning for us: it is dedicated to Anna Maria Bohigas, grandmother of the current winery director, Maria Casanovas. It's our way of paying tribute to the women who have been pillars of the family and the winery.

A unique occasion

The last time we made this wine was in 2017, and in 2024, this variety has not been harvested, so the 2023 Inicis vintage is unique and very special. With only 400 bottles available, it is a unique opportunity for those who love wines that speak of territory, memory, and the future.
